Fidelity Report to reach Parliament on Thursday

Finally! A long, detailed article appearing in the Stabroek News today reveals a little bit of what is expected from the full report on the polar beer scam when it is released to the National Assembly tomorrow.

The report which tells of the uncooperative manner of many customs officials, the manipulating of records, submissions of fake documents calls for criminal charges to be laid against 14 customs officers and the customs broker named in the scam.

This particular broker in an effort to remove from suspicions about him and his meteoric accumulation of wealth recently and quite hurriedly sold of one of his many assets from the East Coast to the owner of a popular (and expensive book store) for quite a bargain price.

Taxes form the backbone of an economy. How else can the government provide for its citizens? It is for that reason that tax evasion should be condemned by all decent Guyanese (Not the lawyers, many of whom aren’t decent and they are some of the biggest tax cheats). In America, a country that many of us admire, robbing Uncle Sam is tantamount to committing murder. The offenders in the polar beer scam should not be treated lightly, they should face the full force of the law.
