Entertainment, or lack thereof

One cannot believe how unbelievably bored I have been recently, and trust me, there are many many many others like me.
Understandable that there clubs, bars, rum shops galore and a few great places to eat but what happens when someone just wants to go out and spend a quiet evening with family or friends and not feel compelled to spend or use the facilities. Let’s face it, with the possible exceptions of the sea breeze hotel (seawalls) and the city mall there isn’t anywhere else and that is quite unfortunate to say the least.
Guyana in the 21st seems so far behind the rest of the world and even so far behind our regional neighbors that it’s beyond depressing. With the majority of the population between 16-35yrs and many living on or below the poverty line, what are these people to do for recreation and entertainment? Since not everyone wants to go clubbing or drinking and even the clubbers sometimes need a break or the clubs just seem the same, week after week.
It really is sad that there is no place where quality time can be spent. Why can’t we have a theater, maybe even a multiplex? I know for a fact that there are many persons who would love to view some of the latest movies on the big screen with superb audio, but currently who wants to go to those two buildings available, which act more as extra cheap hotels with big screens and even larger rats.
The Georgetown Zoo used to be so great years ago, it could have outclassed many in the Caribbean and it was a great place to go with your family in the afternoons, especially on the weekends, but we all know what that place is like now, speaking of which, didn’t the zoo receive funding to provide proper cages for those struggling, stifling harpies?
The theater business has also taken a great hit in recent years with many of the stalwarts of this great form of entertainment either migrating, dying while some just got frustrated and gave up. Consequently, it’s another terrible loss for quality entertainment in Guyana and sadly things aren’t looking to get any brighter anytime soon. It’s sad, too sad.
